PC Gamers Too Good For Consoles Gamers?Date: Sat, 24. July 2010 15:06:10
thsoundman sends in a blog post from Rahul Sood, CTO of HP's gaming business, who claims there was once a project in development at Microsoft to let Xbox users compete against PC users playing the same game. According to Sood, the project was killed because the console players kept getting destroyed by their PC counterparts. He wrote, "Those of us who have been in the gaming business for over a decade know the real deal. You simply don't get the same level of detail or control as you do with a PC over a console. It's a real shame that Microsoft killed this mdash; because had they kept it alive it might have actually increased the desire of game developers and gamers alike to continue developing and playing rich experiences on the PC, which would trickle down to the console as it has in the past."pa href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F10%2F07%2F23%2F2127253%2FPC-Gamers-Too-Good-For-Consoles-Gamers" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a

The MTV Multiplayer Blog interviewed John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment, about the future of MMOs. He discusses some of SOE's current projects and comments that they'll be focusing on consoles for all of their upcoming MMOs. "I would say that we would be one of the early adopters on [bringing MMOs to consoles], and we plan on becoming one of the dominant players in the MMO space on consoles." Sony's plans may include games for their hand-held console, the PSP. Smedley goes on to talk about bringing existing, popular franchises into MMO development, and remarks, "It's pretty safe to say that 'EverQuest' has not seen its last game."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Nintendo's Wii successor to dominate E3 expo (AP)Date: Sun, 5. June 2011 15:51:11
AP - Almost six years ago at the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo unveiled what would eventually become known as the Wii. But the Japanese gaming giant didn't show off the new console's distinctive motion-sensing capabilities until later that year at the Tokyo Game Show. Nintendo won't be such a tease at this year's E3.
The Consoles Are Dying, Says DeveloperDate: Wed, 14. March 2012 08:05:02
hypnosec writes "While you might have often heard that PC gaming is dying — detractors have been claiming this for over a decade — one developer has a different take: that consoles are the ones on the way out. In a 26-minute presentation at GDC — available now as a slideshow with a voice-over — Ben Cousins, who heads mobile/tablet game maker ngmoco, uses statistics of electronic and gaming purchases, along with market shares of developers and publishers from just a few years ago, to come to some surprising conclusions. The old guard, including the three big console manufacturers — Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft — are losing out when compared with the new generation of gaming platform developers: Facebook, Apple and Google. With the new companies, the size of the audience is vastly increased because of their focus on tablets, mobile and browser-based gaming."

Why My iPad Will Never Replace My XboxDate: Fri, 6. April 2012 18:02:32
After the launch of the new iPad, I have read numerous articles (like this and this) discussing how Apple, after cannibalizing both the music and movie industries, now threatens one of the fastest growing industries of my generation: video games. With more than $25 billion in sales last year (hardware, software and accessories combined), the video game industry has already proven to be a lucrative feeding ground for Apple developers. Apple and Android now reportedly comprise over 50% of the mobile games market, overtaking Nintendo?s DS last year, in what has become a more than $3 billion segment of the industry while still in its infancy. This goes well beyond mass-appealers like Angry Birds and Cut The Rope, as companies are starting to target ?hardcore? gamers through titles such as Infinity Blade I and II as well as a handful of Call of Duty derivatives. While it is certainly true that these games command hours of attention from even the most devoted Xbox 360 and PS3 players, I have seen numerous Apple enthusiasts declaring that the iPad will actually REPLACE console games entirely, citing the device?s new screen and processor as the primary reasons.
