OnLive and Gaikai mdash; How To Stop a Gaming RevolutionDate: Mon, 10. August 2009 03:05:44
happierr writes "The gaming industry has been struggling in the last few months, and it is about to struggle even more when OnLive and Gaikai launch later this year. The new services are both a step in the right direction to counter piracy and provide easily-accessible gaming to people with low-end PCs. They might even do for PC gaming what the Wii did for casual gaming; greatly expand the market and draw interest from people who would not ordinarily play games. The services are a real threat for the Big Three video game companies (Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo). How will they combat these revolutionary services? There are a few steps that the Big Three are taking to combat the New Two, such as an increased reliance on peripherals and vision cameras, exclusivity deals, and more online multiplayer features, which OnLive and Gaikai will have a hard time matching."pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/08/09/0522223/OnLive-and-Gaikai-mdash-How-To-Stop-a-Gaming-Revolution?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/08/09/0522223"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/08/09/0522223/OnLive-and-Gaikai-mdash-How-To-Stop-a-Gaming-Revolution?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p

The Problems With Porting GamesDate: Wed, 19. August 2009 03:05:41
mr_sifter writes "There's a large lexicon of monosyllabic, four-letter words for describing something you don't like mdash; but only PC gamers use the word 'port' with such a fervent degree of repulsion. Common complaints about console ports include meager graphics options, dodgy third-person camera angles, poorly-thought-out controls and sparsely distributed save points. In this feature, Bit-tech talks to developers of games such as Dead Space, Red Faction and Tales of Monkey Island to find out why porting games between the three major consoles and the PC is so difficult. Radically different CPU, graphics and memory architectures play their part, as do the differences in control methods and the rules Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo set about how games should work on their systems."pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/08/18/1411225/The-Problems-With-Porting-Games?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/08/18/1411225"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/08/18/1411225/The-Problems-With-Porting-Games?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p
