Review: emGears of War 2/em

Date: Fri, 14. November 2008 03:05:37
The original Gears of War was one of the most popular games of 2006, helping to solidify the Xbox 360's place in the console market. Since then, it's sold about 5 million copies. When word leaked out that a sequel was in the works, many wondered if Epic Games could reach the bar set by the first game. As it turns out, they could. Gears of War 2 will feel very familiar to those who have played its predecessor. Games often have a way of reinventing themselves as sequels come and go, but Epic stuck to the basics of what had already worked so well, and simply set about improving, polishing, and fleshing out the Gears world as much as they could. Amazon Drops Xbox Live Price to $30 (PC World)

Date: Mon, 19. January 2009 12:49:00
PC World - Make what you will of Sony's embryonic PlayStation Home, the PS3's online matchmaking service ultimately costs nothing, while Microsoft's Xbox Live equivalent reaches into your wallet and extracts $50 annually. UK University Making Universal Game Emulator

Date: Thu, 12. February 2009 15:05:48
Techradar reports that researchers at the University of Portsmouth in England are working on a project to create a game emulator that will "recognise and play all types of videogames and computer files from the 1970s through to the present day." One of the major goals of the project is to preserve software from early in the computer age. David Anderson of the Humanities Computing Group said, "Early hardware, like games consoles and computers, are already found in museums. But if you can't show visitors what they did, by playing the software on them, it would be much the same as putting musical instruments on display but throwing away all the music. ... Games particularly tend not to be archived because they are seen as disposable, pulp cultural artefacts, but they represent a really important part of our recent cultural history. Games are one of the biggest media formats on the planet and we must preserve them for future generations."pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/02/12/0830230amp;from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/02/12/0830230"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/02/12/0830230amp;from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~at/WyvYuNkuQVgrUupVPQRQCR3sS_I/a"img src="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~at/WyvYuNkuQVgrUupVPQRQCR3sS_I/i" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/uMbGW5rgI40" height="1" width="1"/

iPhone Shakes Up the Video Game Industry

Date: Thu, 18. June 2009 03:54:19
Hugh Pickens writes "Troy Wolverton writes in the Mercury News that in less than a year, the iPhone has become a significant game platform, but its bigger impact could be to help change the way the game industry does business. 'It's got everything you need to be a game changer,' said Neil Young, co-founder and CEO of ngmoco, which develops games solely for the iPhone. With a year under its belt and an installed base of iPhone and iPod Touch owners at around forty million, the iPhone/iPod Touch platform has eclipsed next-gen console penetration numbers and started to catch up to the worldwide penetration of both Sony's (50 million) and Nintendo's (100 million) devices. Wolverton writes that not only is the iPhone one of the first widely successful gaming platforms in which games are completely digitally distributed, but on the iPhone, consumers can find more games updated more often, and at a cheaper cost per game than what they'd find on a typical dedicated game console. While an ordinary top-of-the-line game for Microsoft's Xbox 360 sells for about $60, and one for Nintendo's DS about $30, a top-of-the-line iPhone game typically sells for no more than $10. With traditional games, developers might wait a year or two between major releases; ngmoco is planning on releasing new versions of its games for the iPhone every four to five months. 'You have to think differently,' says Young. 'It's redefining what it means to be a publisher in this world.'"pa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/06/17/1611259/iPhone-Shakes-Up-the-Video-Game-Industry?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/06/17/1611259"/a/ppa href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/06/17/1611259/iPhone-Shakes-Up-the-Video-Game-Industry?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/NJ4Hct0qGSqpPw_ZMyELqo-CJpE/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/NJ4Hct0qGSqpPw_ZMyELqo-CJpE/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/NJ4Hct0qGSqpPw_ZMyELqo-CJpE/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/NJ4Hct0qGSqpPw_ZMyELqo-CJpE/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/pvR7uVhvu8k" height="1" width="1"/
